Race to scoop metals from the sea floor spurs efforts to understand impacts on rare abyssal species I n 2021, a 10-meter-long robotic vehicle called Patania II trundled along the sea floor in the eastern Pacific Ocean, some 4 kilometers below the surface. Suction heads slurped up potato-size polymetallic nodules, collecting them in a large bin.
