Beyond being a celebration of animated antics, Robert Zemeckis’ Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) remains one of the great mismatched buddy movies. And nowhere is this more evident than in the moment where cartoon character Roger Rabbit, wanted for murder, handcuffs, himself to private eye Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) to secure his services and prove his innocence. “Roger is always up to some kind of shenanigans,” says long-time Zemeckis collaborator Steve Starkey, who was an associate producer on Roger Rabbit. “He puts Eddie in a terrible, awkward position of trying to protect him, but for some crazy reason Eddie is loyal, ingenious and exasperated all at the same time. This scene showed all those qualities of Eddie.” …
