After 25 years in recruitment, what made you want to become a prison counsellor? I had an overwhelming desire to help people in the toughest circumstances. I’d also been volunteering with homeless people and offenders for many years and realised I wanted to do more. I was 49 when I started my counselling training. When you started out, was it intimidating speaking to prisoners? Walking into a prison for the first time was definitely nerve-racking, and I can’t say I wasn’t anxious for what lay ahead. But that wasn’t because of meeting the prisoners, it was from being a newly trained counsellor and worrying about doing everything ‘properly’. Within 10 minutes, I threw that out of the window! …
