The next American footsteps on the Moon are being planned as the beginning of something larger than a brief expedition. NASA is targeting 2028 for a crewed landing near the lunar south pole, with SpaceX developing a version of Starship capable of carrying astronauts from orbit to the surface and back. Two astronauts are expected to spend about a week exploring the landing region while two crewmates remain with Orion.
