Hypertension worsens osteoarthritis and could be a therapeutic target in patients with both conditions Chunyi Wen and Man Ting Au Osteoarthritis is no longer seen as a simple wear and tear of the cartilage that cushions bone joints during movement. It is now recognized as a whole-joint disorder, characterized by cartilage degradation, alterations of the bone under the cartilage, and low-grade inflammation of the connective tissue that lines the joint (synovium). However, no drugs that target these localized tissues have been approved for clinical use thus far. Therefore, disease management has remained largely unchanged since the 1990s and is limited to symptom relief with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and injections of hyaluronic acid or corticosteroids into joints (1). …
