The existing research ecosystem in the United States often treats publication, particularly of new or positive results, as the primary marker of success. To move the scientific enterprise onto a better course, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)—one of the largest public funders of biomedical research in the world—has launched a reproducibility and replication initiative grounded in a conviction that discovery and independent verification are inseparable pillars of science. Science advances not only through discovery but through the collective practices of testing, refining, and integrating knowledge across studies.
