As homeothermic organisms, mammals occasionally must spend metabolic energy to maintain body temperature but try to avoid its wasteful expenditure. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a key role in thermogenic metabolism (1). At normal temperature, thermogenesis is switched off, and BAT lipid turnover is repressed by the circadian clock, an internal mechanism that regulates daily physiological processes, including metabolism. Upon exposure to cold, some metabolic energy derived from oxidative respiration in mitochondria is diverted to heat production (2).
