NASA’s $1.2 billion PRIMA will explore galaxy evolution and planetary birth NASA has selected a far-infrared space telescope to explore the faint, cool glow of the gas and dust that fuel star formation and coalesce into planets. The $1.2 billion PRIMA is the agency’s first Probe class mission, intended to fill a gap between researcher-led Explorer missions and multibillion-dollar flagship missions. Set to launch in 2033, PRIMA would also end a far-infrared observing gap since Europe’s Herschel telescope ceased operation in 2013. The far-infrared is one of the least explored parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Most of the radiation is blocked by Earth’s atmosphere, forcing astronomers to go to space. …
