In March, Indian patents on the active ingredient in weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy expired, unleashing a flood of cheaper copycat versions in the country. Stock analysts predicted Indian sales of such drugs could reach as much as $1 billion a year by 2030, and by July, roughly three dozen generic GLP-1 offerings had hit pharmacies. The bulls had reason to be optimistic: The nation of 1.4 billion has more obese people than anyplace other than the US and China, and with prices as low as $14 per month, the drugs would be within reach of hundreds of millions of potential patients. …
