With artificial intelligence handling more work, a fundamental question looms: What do students still need to learn? By Robb Mandelbaum On Nov. 30, 2022, OpenAI introduced the world to ChatGPT, the latest version of its generative artificial intelligence software. In Philadelphia, Ethan Mollick, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School who’s become something of an evangelist for AI in the classroom and beyond, was waiting. The program’s precursors, Mollick says, “wrote really good middle school essays, but they weren’t very good for anything beyond that.” But GPT-3.5, packaged as a chatbot speaking natural language, promised more.
