coordination could enhance tissue plasticity, helping the liver maintain function while tolerating acute and chronic stress (16, 85–87). Integration with spatial proteomic data further supported this idea. Cross-modal alignment linked organelle architectures to inferred proteomic programs associated with mitochondrial, peroxisomal, and lipid metabolic functions. These analyses suggest that distinct neighboring hepatocytes within the same zone may contribute complementary metabolic activities, thereby distributing functional labor locally rather than acting as uniform zonal units. Together, these data are consistent with a model in which subzonal diversity potentially supports efficient division of metabolic labor within the liver. This raises the question of how subzonal diversity is established. …
