However, none of these approaches can fully ac- count for the complexities described above. For example, apparently disconnected or deflected low-velocity anomalies are difficult to trace consistently and objectively by visual inspection, interconnected net- works can make surface-source mappings nonunique, and plume paths simulated from prescribed mantle flow histories may not coincide with the low-velocity structures imaged by tomography or may represent the only dynamically viable paths.
