In April 2025, Alvin, the legendary deep-sea submers- ible, was on its 17th sortie at the East Pacific Rise, a midocean ridge some 2000 kilometers west of Costa Rica, where the ocean floor slowly spreads apart as magma wells up. On the way down, Andrew Wozniak, a geochemist at the University of Dela- ware, told the undergraduate student joining him about Tica, the exotic hydrothermal field they would visit—a playground for tubeworms, pelt fish, and giant mussels.
