Hidden costs of China’s straw-burning ban In recent years, governments worldwide have regulated or banned open-field burning of crop straw, a long-standing agricultural disposal practice that can cause severe air pollution and associated health risks (1). In China, the world’s largest producer of crop straw (2), local governments implemented strict straw-burning bans in 2013 to reduce its environmental and social harms (3). Between 2013 and 2022, annual agricultural fire spots across 19 Chinese provinces decreased by more than 80% (4). However, the apparent success of the bans does not take into account the costs borne by already disadvantaged farmers. …
