US residents have traditionally invested their 401(k) dollars in stocks and bonds. But in August, Trump signed an execu- tive order directing the government to reevaluate guidance for retirement sav- ers investing in alternative assets such as private equity. With $13 trillion cur- rently held in 401(k)s and other defined contribution accounts, the move is poised to open up hundreds of billions of dollars in capital for the $18 trillion alternative investment industry. There’s nothing currently stopping a retirement manager from offering private assets in their investment lineup, but companies have avoided it out of legal fear of taking too much risk with employees’ savings. …
