Laub* INTRODUCTION: Bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) are the most abundant biological entity on the planet. To withstand phage infection, bacteria have developed sophisticated innate immune systems that are analogous, and sometimes directly homologous, to eukaryotic innate immune systems. Because of their molecular specificity, some of these prokaryotic immune systems, such as CRISPR-Cas and restriction enzymes, have been repurposed as powerful biotechnologies. Dozens of new prokaryotic immune systems have been discovered in recent years, but the full repertoire remains unknown. RATIONALE: Antiphage immunity genes often cluster in prokaryotic genomes in so-called “defense islands.” …
