West, Venizelos Papayannopoulos* INTRODUCTION: Infection of tissues elicits local inflammation through the detection and release of inflammatory substances. Molecular and cellular mechanisms that help to maintain local tissue activation while preventing potentially pathogenic systemic activation remain unclear. Neutrophils are major antimicrobial phagocytes that are recruited to sites of infection and protect the host by releasing extracellular traps (NETs), weblike structures composed of chromatin and antimicrobial proteins that capture and neutralize pathogens. In addition to trapping microbes, NETs are proinflammatory, and dysregulated NET release can drive inflam- matory disease. …
