a simple idea: it’s useful to take a good, hard, serious look at the kind of paranormal and fringe claims mainstream sources either ignore, laugh off, or uncritically promote. This was certainly my approach to the so-called Clearwater Monster in 2021 (published in Skeptic, vol. 26, no. 4). This ob- scure case is justly remembered by cryptozoology specialists as one of the silliest monster mysteries of all time—because it was exposed in 1988 as a humorous amateur hoax, and also because it imagined a fifteen-foot penguin stalking the coast of Florida!
