The story of a man who was destined to develop Alzheimer’s disease, but didn’t, bolsters the idea that heat therapy may shield people from the condition, finds Alice Klein DOUG WHITNEY was virtually guaranteed to get early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, but somehow dodged it, possibly thanks to inadvertent heat exposure while working as a mechanic in ship engine rooms. The case adds to growing evidence around the benefits of heat therapy. Whitney’s family carries a variant of a gene called Presenilin 2. Carriers of this mutation, which causes aberrant folding of proteins in the brain, almost always develop Alzheimer’s in their late 40s or early 50s. …
