NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy have formalized plans to deploy nuclear fission power systems on the Moon by the end of the decade, a move intended to support long-duration lunar missions and lay groundwork for future exploration beyond Earth orbit. The agencies confirmed this week that they have signed a memorandum of understanding outlining cooperation on space-based nuclear power systems, including reactors designed for use on the lunar surface and potentially in orbit.
