Since February, sustained military attacks across the Middle East have damaged oil tankers, refineries, and offshore infrastructure, sharply increasing the risk of chronic marine oil pollution (1, 2). The Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman are semi-enclosed, ecologically fragile basins with water renewal times of roughly 2 to 5 years, which limits their capacity to dilute repeated oil inputs and to recover from cumulative contamination (3). The scientific community should monitor, assess, and work to mitigate the damage. Satellite and open-source monitoring indicate that more than 400 military strikes on oil-related infrastructure have occurred in the Middle East in recent months (2), triggering large-scale oil releases and producing extensive floating burning debris and oil slicks at sea (4). …
