THE FATE OF a small piece of the Brazilian Amazon rainforest rests on the slender shoulders of Antônio Humberto Figueiredo da Cunha. Barefoot and clad in a green T-shirt and blue shorts, he is in the first day of his latest stint of guard duty. From an austere wooden building float- ing near a bank of the Juruá River, he and three other local men, along with his wife and two young children, stand watch over the mouth of a creek flowing into the river. It’s the entrance to watery byways that stretch 20 kilo- meters to São Raimundo. The group members are armed with little but their voices, the authority of their village, and a single, weathered .22-caliber rifle. …
