Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says his company does not know whether its artificial intelligence systems are conscious — and acknowledges that the technology sector may not yet have the conceptual tools to answer that question with confidence. In recent remarks, Amodei discussed the philosophical uncertainty surrounding advanced AI systems such as Anthropic’s Claude models. When prompted internally about the possibility of machine awareness, Claude generated responses assigning roughly a 15% to 20% probability that it might be conscious.
