The brain is a complicated beast. Each of us is born with around 100 billion neurons linked together into some 100 trillion connections. These get pruned back during childhood and adolescence, as our brain makes its networks more specialised and efficient. But this isn’t the end of the big changes we experience. Instead, there are four other events that cause the brain to alter substantially: adulthood, parenthood, menopause and stroke. While they may not apply to us all individually, how the brain responds to each can teach us about the brain’s capacity for change.
