Full article and list of author affiliations: https://doi.org/10.1126/ science.aea2490 Iván Higuera-Mendieta and Marshall Burke* INTRODUCTION: Wildfires are reversing decades of air quality progress in the US, a trend driven by a century of fire suppression that has allowed fuels to accumulate and by a warming climate that is further drying these fuels and increasing the likelihood of extreme wildfire events. The resulting smoke has measurable negative effects on human health, rivaling other impacts of climate change. Prescribed burning, the purposeful application of low-severity fire with the goal of reducing fuel loads, is a central proposed strategy for mitigating future wildfire risk and wildfire smoke. …
