Water isotope measurements are used to model surface water nitrogen flows on a continental scale Martyn Futter Nitrogen fixation converts atmospheric nitrogen into reactive species, including nitrate and ammonia, that are needed for plant growth. Although this process supports global food production, excessive reactive nitrogen leaching into water can lead to harmful algal blooms that create oxygen-depleted “dead zones” in lakes and seas. For this reason, the United Nations is aiming to halve anthropogenic nitrogen waste by 2030 (1), and the Planetary Boundaries framework, which identifies nine global processes that regulate Earth’s stability, recognizes that nitrogen concentrations are one of the most transgressed limits (2).
