Zoology ‘Extinct’ marsupials found alive Two marsupial species thought to have died out in Australia 6000 years ago are alive and well on New Guinea – though they are under threat from logging, finds James Woodford INDIGENOUS communities on the island of New Guinea have helped researchers uncover two marsupial species previously known to science only from fossils in Australia. The ring-tailed glider and pygmy long-fingered possum have now been photographed in the Vogelkop peninsula in Papua, Indonesia. Before this, our most recent evidence of both were 6000-year-old fossils. …
