The removal of invasive cordgrass from Jiangsu Province, China has exposed tidal flats to repeated inundation and drainage. China’s cordgrass removal increases erosion In 2023, China proposed a plan to remove invasive Spartina alterniflora (cordgrass), which covered vast areas of its eastern coastline (1, 2). By late 2025, China had cleared about 97,300 ha of the cordgrass (3, 4), a successful step toward meeting the country’s 2030 target for invasive species mitigation (5). However, clearing substantial amounts of vegetation compromises the biogeomorphic buffers that protect China’s coastlines from ero- sion, especially during typhoon season. China should integrate restoration efforts into cordgrass eradication plans to retain coastline resilience. …
