The 278 winners now face a 9-month race to prove they deserve additional funding CELINA ZHAO and ADRIAN CHO T he U.S. Department of En- ergy (DOE) has announced the first round of grants sup- ported by the Genesis Mis- sion, the governmentwide push into artificial intelligence (AI) in research that the agency leads. The 278 awards unveiled on 22 July will draw on the more than $250 million that DOE has pledged to support teams using AI for everything from designing nuclear reactors to studying soil microbes. “The 278 projects selected today represent the very best of our na- tion’s scientific enterprise,” said Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. …
