In the race to develop new drugs and therapies, automation and artificial intelligence are taking over the repetitive work—and changing what it means to be a scientist. The modern laboratory is a place of precision and repetition. Researchers pipette liquids into wells, culture cells, run assays, and record results, often for hours on end. It is painstaking work, and it is exactly the kind of task that machines do well. A new wave of automation, powered by artificial intelligence, is now transforming the lab. Robots handle the mundane, error-prone steps of experiments, while machine-learning algorithms design the experiments themselves, analyze the data, and even decide what to test next. …
