I want to thank Prof. Sander van der Linden and his colleagues for their article on the application of signal detection theory to inoculation research (published in this issue). The approach is methodologically sophisticated, and the results from analyzing thirty-three experiments with over 37,000 participants are indeed promising. The use of ordinal regression and Bayesian hierarchical modeling to separately assess discrimination ability and response bias represents a genuine advance in addressing concerns about whether inoculation interventions might simply make people more cynically dismissive of all information. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showing improved discernment without a shift toward blanket rejection is particularly encouraging and speaks directly to the lowercase-s versus capital-S skepticism distinction I raised. …
