In October 2002, residents in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC were on high alert, as two gunmen caused terror with a horrifying murder spree. Known as the Beltway Snipers or the DC spree killers, John Allen Muhammad, then 41, and Lee Boyd Malvo, then 17, gunned down and killed 10 strangers and critically injured three others over 23 days. All going about their everyday lives until they found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time, some were targeted at petrol stations as they filled up their cars, while others were killed at car parks, shopping, mowing the lawn or reading a book. …
