His Oscar- nominated 2019 drama Pain And Glory saw Antonio Banderas play a troubled Spanish filmmaker reflecting on his life. Bad Education, from 2004, was a fictionalised exploration of Almodóvar’s traumatic early life at a Catholic boarding school. With his latest melodrama, Bitter Christmas, the writer-director has delved mercilessly into his craft and made “the film where I've been cruellest with myself”, as he describes it. “I have often dealt with this topic — of reality and fiction and how they interrelate,” he tells Empire. …
