The US has the world’s largest rate of incarceration. And, with a prison population just shy of two million and only 350,000 people employed to run federal, state and local facilities, it’s no surprise US corrections officers have suffered a heavy death toll over the 200 years since records started being kept. The total number of fatalities is disputed – the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund puts the number at 528, while the Officer Down Memorial Page estimates 445 – but either way, it’s a disturbing body count.
