bscenity lacks staying power. Nearly a century ago, a British tabloid declared D. H. Law- rence’s novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover “the foulest book in En glish Literature,” giving it a pornographic reputation that endured through the twentieth cen- tury. This was a book made for ban- ning, a lusty loogie in the eye of good taste. If its vulgarities were left un- checked, a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals worried in 1960, “by the time some author writes of Lady Chatterley’s Granddaughter, Lady Chatterley her- self will seem like some prim and puri- tanical housewife.” He was too right. …
