Schuman* INTRODUCTION: Ribosomes, the molecular machinery that trans- lates mRNA into proteins, are composed of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and proteins. rRNA is highly conserved from bacteria to humans and drives the essential reactions for protein synthesis. Adjacent to the highly conserved core of rRNA, there are large insertions in the rRNA of complex organisms that are referred to as expansion segments (ESs).
