Trump administration’s push to boost nuclear power could lead to more cancer cases, some researchers say W hen U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in May 2025 that would stream- line federal radiation protection standards, Emily Caffrey was elated. Existing regulations were a jumble of red tape accumulated over decades, says Caffrey, a nuclear engineer and health physicist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with radia- tion limits varying from one agency to another. Reforms were needed, she says, and Trump’s order—which aimed to revitalize the country’s moribund nuclear industry—“opened a door that historically a lot of people have banged on.” …
