In 2025, the US Southwest suffered its worst dust storm season since the 1930s Dust Bowl (1). El Paso, Texas, experienced more than 10 severe dust storms, which is far above the annual average of 1.8 between 2000 and 2020 (1). Between 2021 and 2025, spring dust storms from Mongolian cyclones spanned more than 3000 km of eastern and southern China (2, 3). These events have surpassed historical records in frequency, intensity, and scope (3), leading to ecological decline, health crises, and economic losses (4, 5).
