WHEN CONSUMER REPORTS evaluates new cars, our experts log thousands of miles on public roads and highways to evaluate real-world performance. Then we push each car to its limits on the track at our 327-acre Auto Test Center in Colchester, Conn. Unlike other publications, we purchase the cars we test. We do this (anonymously) through auto dealerships, just like any other customer. Last year we spent more than $2.2 million buying cars.
