We log many steps a day— typically walking roughly 55,000 miles in a lifetime—over pave- ment, gravel, and hardwood floors, sometimes in footwear that can pinch and rub. Yet you probably never give your feet much thought until you start having significant pain or walking becomes difficult. Both are more likely as you get older. At fault may be ill-fitting shoes, age-related changes such as the loss of fat pads that cushion your soles, and illnesses like diabetes.
