Signs hidden in the world’s oldest tree rings suggest that our sun is capable of solar storms far bigger than we’ve ever recorded – and we could be due one soon, reports Jacklin Kwan THE FIRST first clear sign of exceptionally high solar activity came from Japanese cedar trees. It was 2012, and Fusa Miyake was studying slices taken from one of these ancient trees that had been felled in the 1950s. It had grown on Yakushima Island, a protected site famed for its long-lived trees, some of which have stood for millennia, laying down one ring of wood after another. …
