High temperatures and droughts have forced several countries to shut down nuclear reactors, raising energy prices and the threat of blackouts, reports Madeleine Cuff ON 4 August, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar addressed the nation live from the Paks nuclear power plant, which sits on the banks of the Danube river. “There are people [in Hungary] saying, how are we going to meet this electricity demand? How are we going to keep the lights on?” Normally Paks generates 40 per cent of Hungary’s electricity, but a vicious drought has drained water from the Danube, forcing plant operators to shut down all but one of its eight turbines for the first time in its history. …
