Pengzhe Cai1,2 and Junjie Zhao1,2 Polar molecules in an organic thin film can organize into a specific arrangement where their positive or negative ends line up to create a net positive or a net negative electric field perpendicular to the surface. The alignment of electric dipole moments can modulate charge transport, optical response, and interactions between two different phases or materials (1–3), properties that are relevant to advanced electronics, sensing, energy generation, and biomedical applications. However, inducing this effect often requires a strong external electric field or a post-synthetic treatment that is not suitable for nonplanar substrates and surfaces with complex three-dimensional geometries.
