WRIGHT The coal-fired furnaces, smelters, and steam engines that pow- ered the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution may be long gone, but their legacy has cast a long shadow. Although oil, natural gas, nuclear, and renewable energy technologies have diversified the world’s energy budget since then, coal has long reigned as the single most dominant energy source at the global scale. But in 2025, something remarkable happened: For the first time since the Industrial Revolution, renewable energy use surpassed coal burning as a source of electricity worldwide. …
