This two- dimensional (2D) paradigm, established since the advent of plate tectonic theory, has been increasingly challenged by observations of pronounced structural heterogeneity, magmatic intrusions, and active hydrothermal circulation at ridge- transform intersections. High- resolution geophysical images of these faults show 3D damage zones with strong along- strike variability, especially in the shallow crust. …
