However, the underlying mechanisms and whether physical forces are involved in the spatially patterned regenerative response remain unclear. RATIONALE: Although metabolic zonation across the liver lobule is well established, the determinants that mark mid- lobular hepato- cytes for regenerative expansion have yet to be identified.
