INTRODUCTION: Hormones are chemical messengers secreted into the blood, which act on distant targets to coordinate fundamental physiological processes, such as growth, reproduction, and metabo- lism. Human disorders of hormone production and/or action, such as type 1 and 2 diabetes, obesity, and thyroid disease, affect millions of people globally.
