Levine T he field of chronobiology has largely framed daily bio- logical rhythms as the product of endogenous oscillators synchronized to the 24-hour day by environmental cycles (1–3). In this view, organisms are recipients of temporal in- formation from the environment: Light–dark cycles, tem- perature fluctuations, and social schedules act on cellular “clocks” that in turn organize physiology and behavior.
