s capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) advance rapidly, human understanding of these systems is increasingly falling behind. Several trends are con- verging to make AI systems harder to understand just as they become more consequential. Without deliberate countervailing efforts, the window for building AI systems that we can meaningfully understand and guide may close beyond recovery. One trend challenging understand- ing is the rise of AI-directed AI design. AI systems are now designed and refined by AI systems through recur- sive cycles that outpace human understanding and unfold in high-dimensional spaces that resist intuition.
