Can floating data centres meet AI’s huge energy demand? A US start-up plans to put data centres in the ocean, powering them with wave energy, but the harsh environment could make maintenance challenging, finds Vanessa Bates Ramirez THE data centres powering the AI boom already use more electricity than some small countries, and the International Energy Agency projects that their demand could reach 945 terawatt-hours a year – more than Japan’s entire electricity consumption – by 2030.
